Guess who’s back…back again…

It’s been a very, very long time since I have posted anything on this blog, so first and foremost I will apologise for the absence, whether I have readers who noticed or not.
The past few months have been crazy, to say the least. I lost a lot of motivation to write, simply because I have been so exhausted and caught up trying to gain control of other areas of my life. The writing/blog took a seat on the back burner.
But here we are…a little burst of excitement and motivation has returned, so I’m taking advantage of it while it lasts!

This is always a stressful time of year, it is also one of my favourite times of the year. My birthday is in a couple of weeks, the weather is slowly getting warmer and more importantly, many of my favourite artists are dropping new singles in the build up to the much anticipated release of new albums!

The one thing that is always, and will always be consistent in my life is music. Therefore, I think it is very appropriate for this “guess who’s back” post to be one of the good old “Tuesday Tunes” blog posts.
I always love sharing new music that I can’t get enough of and because it has been a while, instead of one track review today, here’s a little collection of some great tunes that have been firm favourites in my playlists and that you all need to add to yours! Seriously, you won’t regret it.

1. Drag Me Down – One Direction
I could write about this song for a whole post, really. I probably will at a later date that’s how much I love it. It dropped OUT OF NOWHERE just over a week ago and let me tell you, One Direction have still got it. For anyone who thought Zayn leaving would negatively influence the boys music in the future, think again. Drag Me Down is one of the band’s best songs to date, proven as the track reached #1 in Australia last week, marking One Direction’s first number 1 in Australia, EVER! Drag Me Down has a far more classic, rock and roll sound with a subtle mix of modern pop, proving to be a killer combination and a more mature sound for the band. The boys voices work better together than I could have imagined. Not once do you think, WHERE’S ZAYN? Seriously though, Harry’s vocals…killer. It’s so good, on repeat, incredible. Buy it. Stream it. Whatever. But let me tell you, I am beyond excited for what 1D have up their sleeves. The new music is going to be epic.

2. Do It Again – Pia Mia/Chris Brown/Tyga
Honestly, Do It Again is just ridiculously catchy and always puts me in a great mood! There was no avoiding this one, once it was stuck in my head there was no going back.

3. Body On Me – Rita Ora/Chris Brown
Released over the weekend, I was curious to see how this collaboration would go down. Wasn’t disappointed. Body On Me gave me that “Take Me Down/Chris Brown”
kind of vibe – sensual, sexy, smooooooth. It’s super catchy and has a lot of different layers in the song which keeps it interesting. Thumbs up from me! I’m impressed!

4. Can’t Feel My Face + The Hills – The Weeknd
Had to put both of these songs on the list cause I love them both equally. Can’t Feel My Face just hit number 1 in the US this week, marking The Weeknd’s first number one in the country, a perfect build up for his album release later this month. (Which comes out a day after my birthday, thanks for the present!)
Between Can’t Feel My Face and The Hills, it looks like the album is going to have the perfection combination of tracks that range between sultry slow jams and feel good pop/rnb dance jams. And really, who can resist that voice? It’s like honey.

5. Growing Up (Sloane’s Song) – Macklemore & Ryan Lewis/Ed Sheeran
Beautiful. Just beautiful. Everything about this song is raw, emotional, pure. It’s just everything music should be. The collaboration between these guys is something I have waited to see for a long time and just works flawlessly. The lyrics, the passion, it comes across effortlessly. Still leaves me speechless, but also makes me want to get up and go live life to the fullest. Beautiful.

6. Black Magic – Little Mix
I AM STILL SO OBSESSED WITH THIS SONG! It’s so catchy and fun, the perfect pop 90s jam that makes you just want to drive with your girls, flipping your hair and singing at the top of your lungs. So much fun. Really, really love Black Magic.

7. Good For You – Selena Gomez
Ok before we start, the original is the only way to go…this song needs the bass that is missing in the music video which was a little disappointing (Selena looks amazing, but cmon, I want the bass!) That being said, I absolutely love the more mature, rnb sound Selena has gone for. It’s sexy, it’s easy to listen to, it’s goooood. I was a huge fan of her last album, so seeing her grow as an artist has been more impressive than I imagined and I can’t wait to see what she releases next.

8. Wings – Delta Goodrem
Currently #1 on Aussie iTunes (thanks to promo on The Voice) but let me tell you, it deserves that spot because I succumbed to the catchy tune and bought it myself. Wings is so catchy, so so catchy, it should probably come with a warning. I definitely think its one of the best songs Delta has released. Her voice is strong, the layers on the song are magical and the beat makes you want to get up, dance, and fly.

9. Battle Cry – DJ Havana Brown
LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS SONG! Heard it on the radio the other day and instantly downloaded it – amazing. The lyrics and vocal are strong and the beat is infectious. Honestly, this is one of those songs that I am DYING to hear in a club, it has that euphoric feeling, perfect for ensuring you’re in a good mood.

10. Ghost – Halsey
I only recently discovered Halsey and boy am I glad I did…WHAT A VOICE! Honestly she is so talented, her voice just hits you, makes you stop and listen.
I love the lyrics of Ghost, the way the song builds up to the chorus fast then kind of mellows out…it’s just brilliant.
As much as I love Ghost, I also have to mention the cover of Birthday – Katy Perry that Halsey recently. It was beautiful, so so good. Huge fan!

So there we have it! Back into it, a huge blog post to celebrate good tunes, good vibes.
Let’s hope the next post won’t be too far away!

See You Again – Charlie Puth & Wiz Khalifa

Music is a powerful art form. It has the ability to captivate, to be an escape, to make people to understand, to stop time. The best kind of music leaves you covered in goose bumps, bringing tears to your eyes or a smile to your face. It can be rare to find, but when you find one of those powerful, life changing songs…it’s magical. It’s memorable. It’s beautiful.

See You Again is all of this wrapped in one. From the opening piano notes, I was hooked. It played with my heart strings, and that was only the first few seconds. The lyrics are emotional, touching, incredible. So honest and raw. Charlie Puth sings them with such a soft yet powerful voice, it’s impossible to not be affected by them. Even Wiz Khalifa’s rap just adds to the song. It doesn’t feel disjointed, it doesn’t take away from the beauty of it, it completes it, with strong lyrics and a strong beat.

I first heard this song, in a dark cinema, filled with Fast and Furious fans, as we watched the final moments of the latest instalment play across the screen.
Paul Walker’s tribute. Goose bumps. Tears. Smiles. It was perfection.
I can honestly say, I don’t think I have seen any tribute crafted so beautifully, so honestly, and See You Again just completed the scene. I didn’t want to post the official music video of the song, as it does contain many spoilers for the movie…but you must watch it. It is just so special. It leaves me speechless, the first time I saw it in the cinema and as I watch it at home now. That is rare.

R.I.P Paul Walker. You beautiful, kind soul. Your legacy lives on.

Sparks – Hilary Duff

You know those songs that manage to get stuck in your head for hours at a time? Sorry to say, but whether you like it or not, Hilary Duff’s new track will do just that!

After being teased online for the past couple of weeks, “Sparks” has finally been released and I am way too excited about it! From the opening bars, the song proves to be an instant hit. With catchy whistles, infectious pop beats and seductive lyrics, I’m falling in love with it more and more after every listen! It almost gives me Kylie Minogue vibes. I want to dance, I want to sing, I want to drive with it blasting, the song fits, it works. I honestly think this is Hilary’s strongest release since she has made her comeback. (She also looks incredible on the cover art, what a babe!)

“All About You” released in 2014, was Hilary’s last single, proving Hilary had a few tricks up her sleeve, as she confidently produced a pop/folk/indie sound, different, but wonderful. In saying this, Sparks has a stronger pop song, but it is still different to Hilary’s past hits, in the best way possible. It almost sounds sexier, edgier… yet lighter…I don’t know, it’s just so good!

The contrast between All About You and Sparks is really exciting and I think Hilary has a few more tricks up her sleeve. I can’t wait to hear what Hilary’s next album will sound like, but until then, there is no denying, Hilary is back and better than ever!

I Won’t Mind – Zayn Malik/Naughty Boy [DEMO]

Whether you are a One Direction fan or not, there was no escaping the endless drama that has unfolded over the past couple of weeks. What was a band of five, quickly became four (ironically, the title of their latest album) after Zayn Malik decided to leave, half way through a world tour, to “be a normal 22 year old.” Yes, I am a One Direction fan. Yes, I have many opinions about this whole situation, but today, I’m doing what is respectful, I’m focusing on the music.

A couple of hours ago, Naughty Boy dropped the above Soundcloud link on Twitter, sending 1D fans into meltdown. “I Won’t Mind” features Zayn’s flawless vocals, that somehow manage to sound husky and smooth at the same time. With a solid yet fading beat and heavy acoustic/guitar presence, I was honestly taken aback by how beautiful it really is. Originally, I had predicted the first release to come from the Zayn/Naughty collaborations to be of an RnB nature. Instead, the song is stripped back, calm, almost indie. I’m surprised. I’m impressed. The echo. The flow. The lyrics, although sometimes difficult to understand, are gorgeous. Emotional. I am honestly floored by this song.

I’m focusing on the music. I can’t sit back and pretend this song isn’t good. I can’t pretend Zayn isn’t talented. The song is wonderful and I will always appreciate good music. I cannot wait to hear what else these boys have up their sleeve.

Now, addressing the mess of the situation. I do not agree with how this track was brought to light. Tweeted by Naught Boy, in retaliation to heated tweets shared between him and 1D member, Louis Tomlinson. Why release a song that way? Where’s Zayn? Where is the respect? And so close to the announcement of Zayn leaving 1D. It’s all just a bit sus.
Admittedly, there is a lot we don’t know. All I know, is that in my opinion, it doesn’t all add up and I really can’t wait to see what else unfolds so we can gain a better understanding and insight into truths.

I really do wish all the success to Harry, Liam, Louis, Niall…and Zayn. As long as it comes back down to brilliant music being created, they’re doing their job. In the end, if everyone is happy doing what they’re doing, that’s all that matters…
It’s really hard not to get into my many opinions, so I’m going to end this here. Until we find out more, blast some 1D, support the remaining boys and give I Won’t Mind a listen, a chance. It’s good.

*It’s Wednesday morning in AUS, but technically it’s still Tuesday around the world so it’s all good!
Apologies for the lack of posting happening, I’m extremely ill and my brain is struggling to form coherent sentences.
Warning: This won’t be my best written work…BUT THIS AMAZING SONG SPEAKS FOR ITSELF!!

King – Years and Years

Discovering new music is always exciting, but it’s even better when in doing so, you stumble across amazing new artists, unheard of until that moment. Not only do you obsess over one song, you eagerly listen to every other song they’ve released, search for them on social media and hope they do an AUS tour ASAP!
This is what happened when I listened to “King” by Years and Years on the weekend. Yes, it’s only been a couple of days. I’m hooked.

Olly Alexander, Mikey Goldsworthy and Emre Turkmen, making up Years and Years, were winners of BBC Sound of 2015, predicting they will be a defining sound of the year, which makes me really damn excited. Their tracks combine pop and electronic elements in an effortless way, complimenting the unique vocals of Olly Alexander. The music they are creating together is captivating, separating itself from the usual electro/pop songs being released, as it incorporates so many layers and sounds. However, the most impressive element, in my opinion, is the lyrics. Strong, emotive…they tell a story. They’re not repetitive, they’re not weak, they hold the song together unlike many other tracks out at the moment. “King” is an example of this, but be sure to check out “Desire” and “Take Shelter”….incredible. Speechless. 10/10. Especially “Desire” – in love with the lyrics, the story, the sound.

Having already reached number 1 in the UK this month, AUS is catching on and just in the past few days, the song has jumped up the iTunes charts very quickly. I can’t wait to hear Years & Years getting more airplay and you can guarantee I’ll be waiting for King to finally reach the Top 10 & hopefully number 1. I’m predicting it, it’s going to be big.

Jealous (Remix) – Nick Jonas ft. Tinashe

Jealous is one of those songs you have to hear to believe. If you haven’t heard it yet, listen to it. Right now! Give it a chance. Ignore the stigma. Forget about the Jonas Brothers. Give it a few listens and I can guarantee you’ll be humming along and trying to nail the high notes!

Jealous is a completely different sound for Nick Jonas. The cheesy pop of the Jonas Brothers days (no offence, nothing wrong with that!) has turned into a pop/rnb, killer bass, sensual sound. His vocal range is on show, impressive and annoyingly unachievable, making the track extremely well rounded.

Personally, I absolutely love this remix, featuring Tinashe, who recently had worldwide success with “2 On.” I love that this song reflects a passionate romance, with the remixes added verse provided by Tinashe, allowing the song to be from both a male and female perspective. Nick J & Tinashe sound oh so smooth together and have taken the original track to another level.

Now, I was never a diehard Jonas Brothers fan, so if anyone is disappointed I have chosen the remix featuring Tinashe as opposed to Nick’s original, I apologise. However, I am sure we can all put the problems aside and agree Jealous was a huge surprise, but even bigger success! With Nick Jonas appearing at Sydney Mardi Gras over the weekend, and Tinashe getting turnt up all over Australia in the past few weeks, I am eager to see both artists gain a larger following here in AUS! Although I still need to check out Nick Jonas’ new album, I would definitely recommend giving Aquarius, Tinashe’s debut album a listen. Who knows, there may be a Tuesday Tune feature on Tinashe soon…

Love Me Like You Do – Ellie Goulding

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past month, you have come into contact with the Fifty Shades of Grey phenomena. Whether you read the book, saw the movie or are trying to avoid it at all costs, the soundtrack is something you need to get your hands on. Today’s “Tuesday Tune” is the main reason for that! (Sorry Beyoncé, I love you, but this song is my jam.)

Love Me Like You Do by Ellie Goulding is by no means a new release at this point. However, the hype has not died down just yet. It is constantly played on radio, the music video has over 100 million views on YouTube and I am certain I can’t be the only person who is obsessed with it.

I have been a fan of Ellie Goulding for many years. Her voice is incredibly unique, always separating her from other pop artists fighting for the number one spot. My firm favourites have included Lights, Figure 8, Burn… but Love Me Like You Do has gone straight to the top! Written with Tove Lo and produced with Max Martin’s magic touch, there was no doubt this song would be a euphoric, pop anthem. The instrumental opening notes build gradually, soon complimented by her echoing vocals until the force of the chorus hits. It’s explosive. The lyrics are passionate and powerful. It’s truly captivating and so easy to get lost in it while you’re listening.

Featured on the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack, surrounded by many other strong tracks, it can hold its own, easily. Ellie’s distinctive voice is a huge factor in this win. Oh, and did I mention it has been number 1 in AUS and the UK for weeks. Love Me Like You Do is just so damn good. As it continues to storm the worldwide charts, (hopefully climbing to #1 in the US soon) there is no denying Ellie Goulding is at the top of her game.
